Carpet Dyeing: Springfield, Missouri
If your carpet has been bleached by pet urine or other house hold chemical that had a bleaching effect, you may consider dying the spot to make it look less or unnoticeable. If you want to change the color of your carpet, you may want to call a professional in for the task, as it is a big job.
The first thing you need to know is, the type of fiber your carpet is made of. See my article on "Upholstery Burn Test: Springfield Missouri " on our website ultracarpetcare.com
Dye works very different on cotton than it does on a high nylon-fiber synthetic or stain-resistant material. If you have determined that you have a polyester carpet, you can stop here because polyester carpet cannot be dyed. Another thing to know is that you cannot dye your carpet lighter so if you’re trying to cover a dark spot or stain, dye is not going to do it. Dye can only add color to a spot that has had color loss.
Vacuum and clean the carpet area that you are going to dye. Allow it to dry completely, the vacuum it again. Clean carpet will absorb dye more evenly.
You can purchase carpet dye online at a carpet cleaning website, however for a small spot you can go to the grocery store and buy a box of RIT dye that should work well.
Mix the carpet dye with warm water; make sure the proportion allows for enough mix to coat the spot thoroughly and sink to the bottom of the fibers.
Test the color on a scrap of carpet, both for color and for practice.
Turn on the lights or open the shades so that you have plenty of light.
Fill a spray bottle with the warm dye mixture and lightly spray the spot with the dye then blot with a white cloth or paper towel to see if the color is matching up to the original color. If not you may want to strengthen up your mix until you get the appropriate shade.
Once you are satisfied with the results blot the carpet and allow the carpet to dry.
Achieving a perfect match may be hard to do, but a tan spot on tan carpet beats a white spot on tan carpet.
